My Shoulders are Sore

And here is the reason why:

What did we do on the weekend? Well, on Valentine's Day we got rid of the pile of construction debris that had been sitting in the driveway since last summer.

yay!
The next day we shoveled gravel from the back of the truck onto some of the pathways around the house.I will be honest and admit that John did most of the heavy work (someone had to take pictures!), but I did enough that my shoulders are very sore today. It is the delayed soreness that comes from true muscle trauma. The next day you feel it, but the second day, you really feel it.

At my old gym in Columbus, the owner offered something he called a "dino-workout," as in dinosaur. It involved lifting and carrying extremely heavy things for as long as you could. Different objects, like giant tires, rocks of varying sizes, bags of sand, etc., worked different muscles as you struggled to push and pull and carry them across a line. (I never took part in this workout, mind you.) Ironically enough, this sort of exercise routine is also called a "farmer workout."

I would like to put an open invitation out there to all the "dino-day" guys and gals: Let's schedule three or four weekends through the spring and summer and get our workout on! C'mon, whaddya say?! It'll be fun, dude!

Ha! Ha ha! I've done that! Only when I did it, I had to shovel pea gravel from the dump truck size pile in the driveway into the wheelbarrow, wheel it over and through the root maze on the side of my parents house, dump, spread, and repeat. Many, many times. Ah, those were the days... My glass is raised to you, my dear, but my shovel remains on the wall. Nothing personal. ;)

Actually, right soon I'll be shoveling massive quantities of compost. Will that count?

Yes, Maggie, compost counts. And I don't hold it against you at all. Maybe you can come to the workout and you and I will make sure the beer stays cold for all the hard workers! Like you, Jen! And I will say I'll make cake and then not do it.
ha ha.

Do you have a hammock? Cause I'm really good at chilling beer from a hammock. I'm just sayin...

Heck, I'll bring the cake if all I have to do is chill beer.

Girl, I have a hammock! I do!

Hi Meg. I found you from Julie Zickefoose's blog, and just wanted to introduce myself. I also live the rural life here in SE Ohio (Athens County). I really enjoy your blog. I know that delayed-onset muscle soreness of which you speak oh too well. I'm sure I will make friends with it soon. My husband and I plan on cutting and hauling firewood this weekend - does that count for a "dino-day"?

Hi Heather!
Thanks for your comment. Yes, cutting and hauling woods counts, too! I am looking forward to a whole summer of that since John is determined to lay in a year's worth of wood.
I hear all about Athens County while listening to WOUB. ha!
Love your blog. I'll be visiting:)

Oh Meg-pie: I am soooo tacking this blog post on the wall of the gym. You are gonna have all the muscle men out at your place this weekend ready to "dinocize!" Be careful what you wish for! By the way, Maria responded to this blog with "If I was at the farm, I could help Mama Meg..." God, that girl loves you! Mary
